Read full description of the books:I loved this book. Flat-out. I'm well above the age of the intended target audience but this story was still entertaining and provided a fantastic break to the almost repetition that YA books were attempting to clobber me with. (I have had enough of love triangles!!! Just kiss one, it's not that hard!)
This book is the sequel to Castle of shadows and is twice the story, if not more. I read this one first and found, although there were allusions to previous events, its predecessor is not necessary. The feel of this book was reminiscent to Charles Dickens' work, and I know many agree. Our protagonist is Tobias Petch, who was the secondary character in the first book.In this novel he has centre stage and boy does he own it. Renner has created a character we can easily relate to, there isn't any of those annoying moments when a character does something pointless that is basically only included for plot convenience. His motives and actions just come alive and you honestly love him and feel for the situations he gets put in. And the relationships between characters felt real too. This book features politics which I loved but was surprised to find considering I'd aim this book at 10 year olds. However it wasn't heavy but just added a depth to the story.
The thing that makes this book (that deserves way more attention) is the plot and characters. I loved every page, each twist and turn and there were quite a few! This coupled with the fact that the characters feel just as real as you, makes this book so amazing. I've never felt so immersed before. There are so many characters whose motives you just can't put your finger on and it's wonderful. You can't really name anyone the bad guy! The character of Alistair Windlass in particular... I'd recommend the book just so others can meet him. He's an ingenious character who chooses morals and sides like I'd pick out a top.
My one little nag is something that always drives me mad. In this book we switch perspectives between Tobias Petch and Charlie, the main heroine of the series. I'm sorry to say that Charlie's bits bored me and I was just desperate to turn back to Toby. The whole changing storylines thing only works if they're both of equal interest but that's not the case here. I felt the author felt forced to include Charlie because she's meant to be the main character of the series. But all is forgiven as I just love this book. It's practically got sentimental value to me now, as I've been waiting ages for it's sequel! I recommend this book to everyone of all ages as it's one of those that everyone can just get really into. But be prepared for a wait and heartache- as I still can't find even a release date for the next one!

Ellen originally trained as a painter and surrounds herself with sketches of her characters as she writes. She spins wool as well as stories, knitting and weaving when time allows. She plays the violin, fences (badly!) and collects teapots and motorcycles.
Her first book, CASTLE OF SHADOWS, won the Cornerstones Wow Factor Competition, the 2010 North East Book Award and was chosen for both THE INDEPENDENT and THE TIMES summer reading lists and, along with the sequel CITY OF THIEVES, was included on THE TIMES list of best children's books of 2010.
