Read full description of the books:

I, BARRY LYNDON paid royally for everything I took; and I took everything I wanted. My entertainments were those of a gentleman of the highest distinction. Let no scoundrel presume to call me an adventurer. So is a lawyer or a gallant soldier. Let no man say that I was penniless. I had the wealth of Europe at my command. My profession was play—at which I was unrivalled.

As to my way of fascinating women, I followed this maxim: Dare and the world always yields. And thus I won my Lady Lyndon. Her shape was fine, her hair was dark, her eyes good and exceedingly active. She had as much love, and as little heart, as any woman I ever knew.

Thackeray, an only child, was born in Calcutta, India, where his father, Richmond Thackeray (1 September 1781 – 13 September 1815), held the high rank of secretary to the board of revenue in the British East India Company. His mother, Anne Becher (1792–1864) was the second daughter of Harriet and John Harman Becher and was also a secretary (writer) for the East India Company.

William had been sent to England earlier, at the age of five, with a short stopover at St. Helena where the imprisoned Napoleon was pointed out to him. He was educated at schools in Southampton and Chiswick and then at Charterhouse School.
